Discussion:

Well I suspect there are people out there with MP3 made from older
concerts.

Is there a torrent tracker/site that has these legally traded files
(MP3s) available?

I have listened to nearly 45 different concerts, many of the same
songs and each performance is different. It seems, music is a living
thing for Bruce, doesn't it?

Also does anyone had a list of Dead Concerts in which Bruce played or
even a definitive set of dates?

Furthurnet is the only option I know of for MP3s of full shows. Big
Rick has a ton of shn/flacs on his ftp site, email one of us if you
need a login.

9/24/88, almost every show from 9/16/90 until March of 1992, 6/20/92,
3/23/95, 6/25/95. Probably a few others.

Hornsby played with the Dead at the following shows:
6/25/88
9/24/88
7/12+13/89
12/10/89
7/10/90
9/15/90-3/23/92 (most of this timeframe--started to phase out in 1992
after birth of his sons).
6/20/92
3/18/93
6/25+26/93
3/25/94
7/16+17/94
8/4/94
3/23/95
6/24+25/95
After 1992, Bruce mainly played in Landover, DC, NC, and NY. It's
interesting when you hear how he came out really strong especially during
the initial MSG 90 run. Listen to those shows and you'll learn more about
Bruce than anything. As Phil once said, any band that Bruce played in was
his band. This seems like an amazing thing to say especially when it comes
to an established band like the Grateful Dead but it was true. I think
Bruce picked his spots thereafter and was not leading the charge as much
as in the beginning. It was fun to see how he lifted the band's enthusiasm
at the beginning. I think Bruce got restless after a while but still
enjoyed playing some great songs in some great places of the country. As
much as the Dead were considered an improvisational band, I think Bruce
was (and is) far more improvisational. The Dead were locked into their
routine and didn't venture out so much. Bruce wanted to switch things
around (open with space or songs traditionally played in the second set,
etc.) and it was Garcia who wanted to keep things in the familiar routine.
Who would have thought.
That's it.

That's it.
Jerry was starting to fall apart by then. In McNally's book it says
Bruce actually took Jerry to task after some uninspired playing during
the 9/91 MSG run:

" 'I resent you coming to the gig and being there but not being there.
You're not bringing what you can to the show every night.' To which
Jerry replied, 'Well, you don't understand 25 years of burnout, man.'
Though the conversation was cathartic, and Garcia responded with a
little more energy in his playing, he was clearly still subpar."

Shows where Bruce sat in were often among the best played after 1992.
It did seem like a little change of pace and some fresh playing spurred
him on a bit.

I saw the batter list and your comments about bruce's effect and
effort. I see what I can do to collect a few of the concert and see
if I can hear the differences...

Is anyone going to upcoming portland or teluride shows...?

Sorry for the rant but I've had too many recent concert experiences
tarnished by drunken fools lately.

You know, I was going to let your drunken rambling about the 9/15/06
setlist pass without comment but if you're this far gone...

What is it with today's concert-goers and their apparent need to get
plastered? I'm not talking about folks who have a drink or two to be
social, I'm talking about the type who get so wasted they start saying
things like "3/23/95 or STFU" or "im way too messed up", or laughing
during a song like Standing on the Moon (some jackass at the 7/19/06
Konocti show), or starting a "fight"* during I Can't Make You Love Me
(of all songs!?!?) at a recent Bonnie Raitt concert.

What gives? What's the appeal? Can't you get wasted at home, or at a
bar? Don't you want to have some shred of your mental facilities
functioning to enjoy the music? Or does anyone even care about the
music any more, maybe shows are just a place to go to be seen and get
rowdy?

Funny, of the recent shows I've been to far and away the best behavior
was at a Mickey Hart / Planet Drum show at a converted movie theater in
Santa Cruz, where the dreadlocked crowd might *look* rowdier than the
clean cut folks that make up most of Hornsby's or Raitt's audience, but
this hippie crowd was _dead_silent_ when it should have been, while
showing their appreciation and participating in the beat quite
respectfully when appropriate. The runner up was a *free* concert in a
park by the JGB Band, where a good third of the audience was made up by
homeless drug addicts. Yet they behaved much better than the folks
shelling out $50 or more for acts like Bruce or Bonnie.

It feels like I should be too young to be this cynical but...I can't
believe how little consideration many people show these days.

*If you can call two grown "men" throwing slow, looping, impactless
punches that would be an embarassment in a 6th grade schoolyard scrap a
fight.

Sorry for ranting, to get some karma back if anyone wants a copy of the
JGBB or Planet Drum tapes, let me know.

I agree. Drunks are stupid children who don't know how to act
responsibly. I know a lot of college kids who do that same thing. It's
such childish behaviour. Children should stay home!!

I don't know about how they sound, my music tastes are a little
limited... I like Bruce, it is the way I wish I could play, If I
still played at all.

Then I have been slowly getting each and every concert I can find of
Bruce's.

I sure when Rick get his sever up and running, I will fill many holes
in my collection.
